As the demand for specialized eye care surged and patient numbers at the Outpatient Department (OPD) soared, the Al-Shifa Eye Trust initiated a transformative expansion project in Chakwal. This endeavor sought not only to increase the hospital’s capacity but also to redefine the standard of care for the region’s rapidly growing population.

The newly developed OPD block is a testament to forward-thinking design and patient-centered care. Spanning 11 consultation rooms, 2 refraction rooms, an Emergency OPD, and a minor OPD, the facility is equipped to handle 500-600 patients in spacious, comfortable waiting areas. The design process was guided by a commitment to efficiency and privacy, with dedicated doctor’s corridors ensuring smooth, unhindered movement of medical staff and streamlined patient care.

Central to the architectural vision was the integration of sustainable technologies and local materials, reflecting Al-Shifa’s commitment to environmental stewardship. A double-skin facade, strategically placed louvers, insulated glass, and internal gardens work in harmony to reduce the building’s environmental impact. These features, along with light shelves that optimize natural daylight, contribute to a soothing, healing environment while minimizing energy consumption. The use of locally sourced materials not only reduces carbon emissions but also supports the regional economy, embodying a holistic approach to sustainability.

The expansion also addresses broader community needs, creating a healthcare environment that fosters well-being and community engagement. The facility is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for future adaptability as medical technologies evolve and patient demographics change.

This project represents a collaborative effort, with architects, engineers, and medical professionals working closely to overcome challenges and deliver a facility that meets both current and future needs. It stands as a model for healthcare design, blending cutting-edge innovation with a deep respect for the environment and the community it serves.
