RACECOURSE ROAD RENOVATION

Forty years ago, we designed a home for a client who has now returned to reclaim it as their primary residence in Pakistan. This renovation was not just about updating the house but about respecting its history while adapting it for contemporary living.

The interventions were subtle but meaningful, with each change aimed at preserving the home’s original spirit. The most prominent of these was the enlargement of the windows, a decision that not only opened the house to more light but also created a stronger connection to the surrounding landscape. Sunlight now enters freely, transforming the interiors throughout the day and breathing new life into the space.

Restoring the original terrazzo floors was another key aspect of the renovation. These floors, polished to their former sheen, now serve as a physical link to the house’s past, grounding the space in its history while enhancing its beauty.

New additions, such as a master bedroom suite and a state-of-the-art kitchen, were seamlessly integrated into the design, offering modern comforts without overshadowing the home’s original character. The front door and waiting area were reimagined to create a more welcoming entrance, while the study was extended to accommodate the owner’s current needs.

One of the most notable changes was the enlargement of the gate, designed to draw attention to the cantilevered balcony—a striking feature that had been part of the original design but had remained understated. Now, with the expanded view, this architectural element can finally be appreciated as intended.

The renovation was guided by a clear principle: to enhance the functionality and beauty of the home while remaining faithful to its original vision. Each update, whether large or small, was a dialogue between past and present, creating a home that honors its history while embracing its future.
