Envisioned as a capital of the newly formed autonomous province of Gilgit Baltistan, The strategic conceptual master plan dealt with the socio, economic and environmental issues of Gilgit city with opportunities for directional growth. The conceptual master plan developed by SAK Associates would provide a basic outline for the comprehensive master plan. Although a working plan for the proposed strategies would be devised at comprehensive planning stage, phase two of SEA (Strategic Environmental Assessment) report will provide a vision for future Gilgit City. ‘Vision-Gilgit City’ provides the ideals for development of the new capital. Vision and objectives were set out in the inception report while strategies, approaches to development with assessment of sites, and preferred growth strategy was developed in a graphic form with its benefits. The plan identified areas for urban renewal, mitigation of hazards and established traffic corridors. It also set green belts to curtail growth, besides access and walking tracks to conservation sites.
The report also provided the ToRs for a detailed master plan of Gilgit City.
